Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 (this page)
This page covers the remains of some of the railway wagons and other
forms of slate transportation that were found on the upper levels in the Moelfferna Quarry.
The charred remains of a flat wagon that was used
to transport slate blocks to the processing mill, where the slate was cut to
size and split into individual slates.
The remains are the right way up. Originally there were two further
cross members, making a total of four. |
This is a former slate waste tipping wagon.
The far end of the wagon is open.
Slate waste was put into the vehicle and it was pushed to a tipping
point. The handle on the back end of the wagon was used to lift that end
and pour out the waste from the other end. This is a typical Welsh slate
industry design of rubbish wagon. |
This view is of an unknown type of former railway
wagon. It is upside down and the scrap merchants have removed the
wheelsets by smashing the axleboxes, probably with a sledge hammer. |
The remains of one of the slab carriers. In
this instance all four cross members were still present. |
This is another slab carrier that had four cross members, but two of them are
now missing.
The wagon is upside down and the wheelsets have been removed. |
This appears to be a slate sled, which was
presumably used to move lumps of slate around the quarry in areas that were
not served by the railway. It is upside down. |
The remains of various slate wagons and sleds were
on a slate tip. |
An axlebox can be seen under the remains of this
railway wagon. |
The remains of the same wagon, pictured from
above. |
