Rail Album for railway and other photographs

Part 1      Part 2 (this page)

An official photograph of a train of 50-ton 'Warwell' wagons carrying Sherman tanks. The nearest wagon is labelled as on loan to the LMS, which is consistent with the LMS brake van to the right of the photo.

MoD's remaining fleet of 50-ton 'Warwell' private owner wagons were given new bogies and were issued design code PF 041B in wagon number series MODA 95500 to MODA 95583. The vacuum braked wagons were issued TOPS code PFV and those with vacuum brake and through air pipe were PFB. Later, when air braking became standard the wagons became TOPS type KWA.

Here PFA wagon number MODA 95506 is seen carrying a road trailer at Bevois Park Yard, Southampton, on 4th February 1990. The wagon carried a maker's plate indicating it was built by the Southern Railway at their Lancing Works in 1942.

This wagon was one of 100 purchased by the LMS after the war. These were used as follows:
12 wagons numbered LMS 360329 to 360340 to diagram 133F were designated 50 Ton Warwell Trolley.
38 wagons numbered LMS 721200 to 721237 to diagram 5B were designated Bogie Bolster B as lot 1547.
50 wagons numbered LMS 748300 to 748349 to diagram 11D were designated 30 Ton Bogie Rail Wagon as lot 1497.

BR bought further forty 50-ton 'Warwell' wagons and numbered them into their Western Region series as W 160800 to W 160839. These were identical to the conversion to LMS diagram 5B and were designated as 30 Ton Bogie Bolster B. They were converted to diagram J33 at Swindon Works in July 1949, which later became known as diagram 1/486. The conversion work was allocated lot number 3415.
