Southern Railway West Country &
Battle of Britain Steam Locomotives

Ex-SR Bullied West Country Class Pacific 34094 "Morthoe" on ex-GWR territory (probably around High Wycombe).  These air-smoothed steam locos caused something of a stir when they were introduced, because of their looks and because of the many technological innovations they incorporated.  Even the wheels were of the Boxpok disc type.

The West Country and Battle of Britain classes were to the same design, but carried names appropriate to each class.  They were designed under the leadership of O V Bullied, Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the Southern Railway (SR).  The first loco entered traffic in 1945.  The two classes were officially referred to as the Bullied Light Pacifics.
