Thirty-five A4 class 4-6-2s were built
by the LNER between 1935 and 1938. LNER 4469 "Sir Ralph
Wedgewood" was badly damaged at York during a Second World
War air raid, the others continued into service with BR. The
class was withdrawn by BR between 1962 and 1966.

Class A4: BR 60027 "Merlin" hauls "The Elizabethan"
non-stop from Edinburgh to London circa 1960. This loco was built
at Doncaster as works number 1851 in 1937. She entered service as
LNER 4486, but was later renumbered as LNER 588 and subsequently as
27. She later became BR 60027 and was withdrawn in 1965.
Class A4: LNER 4498 "Sir Nigel
Gresley" on display at Doncaster Works Open Day 10th July 1994.
This loco was built at Doncaster as works number 1863 in 1937. She
entered service as LNER 4498 and was renumbered as LNER 7.
Following nationalisation she became BR 60007 and was withdrawn from
service in 1966.
