The S-160 2-8-0s were designed to be lifted
by their boilers. A securing ring for lifting is located at the top of
the front of the smokebox. The dome cover could be removed and this
provided the second anchoring point for the crane's lifting bar. |

LMS motive power inspectors who rode
on the S160s hauling coal trains between Toton and Brent shortly after
their arrival were so impressed with the self-cleaning smokeboxes,
rocker ashpans and drop grates, that these fittings were incorporated in
post-war LMS engines and BR 'Standard' locomotive designs. |
