Another view of the S-160 WD 93257 "Carl R Gray Jr" on the Longmoor Military Railway  Behind the loco's tender is a ramp wagon for loading tanks onto trains. One wheelset was temporarily removed and the sloping surface of the wagon then provided the necessary loading ramp. Photograph Frank Jones.

The S-160 2-8-0s were designed to be lifted by their boilers. A securing ring for lifting is located at the top of the front of the smokebox. The dome cover could be removed and this provided the second anchoring point for the crane's lifting bar.

LMS motive power inspectors who rode on the S160s hauling coal trains between Toton and Brent shortly after their arrival were so impressed with the self-cleaning smokeboxes, rocker ashpans and drop grates, that these fittings were incorporated in post-war LMS engines and BR 'Standard' locomotive designs.
