The
LMS "Black Five" 4-6-0s were designed under the
direction of William Stanier. They depart from previous LMS
practice by having tapered boilers, a feature which William
Stanier brought with him from his previous employment with the
GWR. The first example was introduced to traffic in 1934 or
1935. |

standard the class was fitted with Walschearts valve gear.
However a few examples were fitted with either Caprotti or
Stephenson valve gear. |

This locomotive was built by the LMS Crewe Works in 1934, their works
number 216.
