Croydon, Merstham & Godstone Railway

Part 1    Part 2 (this page)

The surviving Croydon, Merstham & Godstone Railway plateway track has been moved into storage underground in Reigate Caves.  Many of the photographs on this page were taken using a flash gun.

The track that was formerly at Quality Street, Merstham. Reigate Caves 13th June 2009.
The "L" section of the plateway track can clearly be seen.

A view along the track that was formerly at Quality Street in Merstham.  The gauge of the Croydon, Merstham & Godstone Railway was 4ft 2in.  Unlike a conventional railway, the gauge of plateway track is measured over the outer faces of the two uprights of the "L" section plates. Reigate Caves 13th June 2009.

A stack of former Croydon, Merstham & Godstone Railway plates.  These are understood to have found use after the railway had closed in the quarries at Merstham. It is believed that these were at one time displayed as a section of track in the grounds of the "Jolliffe Arms" at Merstham. Photo graph taken at Reigate Caves 13th June 2009.

After the Croydon, Merstham & Godstone Railway closed some of the track was re-used in the quarry at Merstham.  But when relaid the uprights of the "L" section rails were arranged to be on the outer edges. Reigate Caves 13th June 2009.
