Interpreting Arab Loco Numbers

Arab countries tend to mostly use a numbering system which is somewhat foreign to western eyes, but is in reality simple and straightforward.  It is actually Hindi.

What you do is substitute the numbers as follows: -

It is important to note that Hindi numbers always read from left to right, exactly the same as western numbers, so we can simply convert Hindi numbers to western ones using the above table.


    Some examples

    Iraqi State Railway 4-6-2 streamlined locomotive marked ٥٠٢ was number 502.

    Jordan Railway 2-6-2T marked ٦٣ was number 63.

    Hedjaz Railway 2-8-0 marked
٤٨ was number 48  (this loco was later renumbered ٥٣ or 53).


    Egyptian State Railways 2-2-2-2 marked ٢٧٩ was number 279.
